Our History

Founded 1961 Patron: H.R.H. Princess Lilian, Duchess of Halland

In 1961, our founding member, Sissi Rasmussen, and 9 other young wives and mothers new to Sweden met through school and social circles and became friends. They realized that they all faced the same challenges in living abroad. They wanted to share their experiences, learn from each other and most of all meet and make friends during the shorter or longer time they lived in Stockholm. This is how the IWC Stockholm was born. The word spread quickly, the club quickly grew into a unique international society with regular lunches featuring prominent speakers or performances. Introduction to Swedish culture was established through these lunches, coffee mornings, afternoon teas and visits to art exhibitions. The same applies still today. At the same time the other important aspect of the club, charity work, took off. This remains an important part of the Club's activity.

Today we have 350 members representing 60 different nationalities. Since 1982 we had the honour of having Her Royal Highness Princess Lilian, Duchess of Halland, as our club´s patron until she passed away in 2013.

Name

IWC stands for International Women`s Club.

Purpose

The club´s purpose is to welcome newcomers to Stockholm and provide them with a platform for creating networks among the foreign and local communities.

The other major activity is helping the needy whenever we can, both internationally and locally. Every year the club organises three Charity events in October, December and March. These charities are carefully chosen by the IWC´s Executive Board. The club´s philanthropic activities receive kind and generous support from the Swedish Royal Family, embassies and many companies.

Membership

To join in the IWC's worthwhile purpose, you are welcome to apply for membership when you arrive in Stockholm and find out more about what we do. The IWC has a set of rules as to your eligibility, the applicants should be sponsored by a club member and must be approved by the Executive Board. If you do not have a sponsor, please get in touch with us.

Running of the club

The IWC has been administered on an entirely voluntary basis by its members since its formation in 1961 and is the same today. The Executive Board has 11 members, President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, Bulletin Editor, Philanthropic Chair, Programme Chair, Membership Chair, Hostess Chair, Museum/Tour Chair, Social Activities Chair. We also have a representative for international activities, the International Coordinator. Separate from the Executive Board is the Nominating Committee whose role is to ensure the continuity of Board membership needed for a smoothly running club.

Club Motto

55 years have passed in sharing friendship and goodwill. The IWC is purely a social club with no religious, political or commercial affiliations. With its motto of Friendship and Goodwill To All, the IWC has created a peaceful and harmonious place for its members and everyone who joins in our activities.
